President Rev. Robert A. Dowd, C.S.C., Inaugural Address

“A Catholic university, according to my predecessor and brother in Holy Cross, Father Ted Hesburgh, “should be a bridge across all chasms that separate modern people from each other.”

Now, when I reflect on those words, I see a problem and an opportunity.

The problem is clear: Those chasms are widening.

And the opportunity is here: Notre Dame must be the bridge that Father Ted spoke of, and all of us must be bridge-builders.

But before I explore that idea, let me just say right now: I am honored to serve as Notre Dame’s 18th president, and I am deeply humbled by the trust shown in me. ‘This doesn’t work if you do it every week.

It works when a head coach saves it for the right time and when a coach, most importantly, is SINCERE about it.

Freeman says he can’t worry about being someone else but instead has to be himself in order to have success as Notre Dame’s head coach.

From the way things went and how Notre Dame reacted in a hostile environment, it’s clear this team would walk through the gates of hell for the real Marcus Freeman.”
