Schuyler Colfax

Schuyler Colfax (1823-1885) was a prominent figure in American politics, particularly known for his time in South Bend, Indiana, where he had a significant impact on the community and the nation. Born on March 23, 1823, in New York, Colfax moved to South Bend in the early 1840s, where he began his career in journalism and quickly became involved in local politics.

Colfax served as the editor of the South Bend Register, where he honed his oratorical skills and gained public recognition. His passionate advocacy for the abolition of slavery and support for the Republican Party cemented his reputation as a leading voice in the region. In 1855, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Indiana’s 12th congressional district. As Speaker of the House, he presided over the adoption of some of the most important amendments to the constitution: the 13th, 14th and 15th. He also presided over the impeachment of Andrew Johnson. The case could be made that he was the most important person in post-Civil war politcs if not the defacto president during the Johnson administration.

While living in South Bend, Colfax was a key figure in local development, contributing to the growth of the city and its infrastructure, particularly through his support of the railroad. His efforts helped to position South Bend as a vital transportation hub during the mid-19th century.

Colfax’s political career culminated when he was elected Vice President of the United States under Ulysses S. Grant in 1869. Although his time in office faced challenges and controversies, including a resignation due to corruption allegations, his roots in South Bend remained an essential aspect of his identity.

After his vice presidency, Colfax returned to his home in South Bend, where he continued to be involved in civic activities until his death on January 13, 1885. His legacy is reflected in the communityโ€™s history and the broader narrative of American politics during the Reconstruction era.
